Yeah, But Can Tibetan Monks Stifle the Startle Reflex During An Eye Exam?

Several months ago I came across a study in which a Tibetan Monk, in meditation, was able to control the startle reflex when a gun was fired nearby. This was the first example of someone controlling what was thought to be an automatic physiological response. (Although this is not where I first heard about it, you can read about this inthis article, The Lama in the Lab at Shambala Sun).

It’s pretty cool that he can suppress the startle reflex when a gunshot goes off, but I have a new test for that monk: The eye puff test you get during your annual eye exam. I had my exam today and thought about that monk as I placed my chin in the cradle, preparing for that innocuous puff of air. I thought, “Hey, if he can do it for a gunshot, I can do it for a silly little puff of air on the eye.”

Not a chance. Even with the technician counting down and preparing me, I was completely startled each time.

Oh well. I guess I still have a ways to go!

Everything Flowers From Within Of Self Blessing

Yesterday afternoon I went for a much-needed walk in the woods, Armstrong Woods to be exact. Here in Sonoma County, we’ve already had two decent storms ushering in an early start to the rainy season.

So, as I entered the great quiet of the redwood forest there was a wetness infusing the air and the ground. The bark of the majestic trees was dark with moisture. Droplets of water hung from the ends of the fern fronds. And, in the distance, I could hear the faint trickle of water beginning to flow through the creek bed that would soon be overflowing.

When I walked into the shadows of the redwood canopy, my eyes seemed to play tricks on me as they adjusted to the darkness of the forest. In those moments of adjustment, taking in the darkness around me – dark wood, dark ground, even dark air it seemed – the moss on the trees and rocks appeared to be glowing. This brilliant green presence within the forest darkness struck me the way a neon light stands out on a lonely highway. The moss seemed to be lit from within.

I immediately thought of Galway Kinnell’s poem, Saint Francis and the Sow. It begins like this:

The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self blessing;

It was as if the early rains had come and awakened the moss to its self-blessing. Now, after the long dry season, the moss was flowering from within and shining its inner light out into the world.

In the poem, Kinnell goes on to say:

though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on the brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;

The early Autumn showers were like a hand on the brow of the moss, reminding it, retelling it that it is lovely, allowing it to once again, flower, from within, of self-blessing.

We all need that reminder from time to time. We all need a hand on our brow or a word or two reminding us of our loveliness so that we can awaken our self-blessing and flower from within.

What is your rain? What awakens your self-blessing? What can you do today that will encourage the flowering from within of self-blessing?

In Michigan? Look For My Article In The Healing Garden Journal

An article I published in my newsletter a while back was picked up by a wonderful magazine in Michigan, the Healing Garden Journal.

I’m waiting to receive my copy of the magazine, but until it arrives, I’ve been perusing the offerings in the online version of the Journal.

The best part, for me, was being re-introduced to the article that I wrote. It’s no coincidence, of course, that the subject that I wrote about over a year ago, is once again, active in my life.

You can read the article in the online journal at the Healing Garden Journal. I have also posted it as a separate entry here: Surrendering To Freedom: Stepping Into Grace

Law of Attraction Carnival # 6: The Power of Intention

Welcome to the November 14th edition of the Law of Attraction carnival. The topic of this edition is The Power of Intention.

There is a distinct difference between intention and Intention. How many times have you set an intention only to realize a few days or weeks or months later that you were not fully committed to its manifestation? And how long have you continued to push even after you have lost the enthusiasm that caused you to embark on that path?

Small-i intentions come from the mind and from the will. They are those ideas that seem great in the moment but, for whatever reason, fail to ignite the spark within us that transforms them into sustainable Intentions.

Big-I Intentions, on the other hand, come from the heart and from our Source-connected, wise self. These big Intentions inspire us. They call to us and call us into a grander expression of who we are. These Intentions feel aligned with who we are and serve to draw us into our true nature. These Intentions are so powerful that there is no way we will allow them to remain unmanifested.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all of our intentions were Big-I Intentions? My personal experiences and observations have led me to believe that in order to get to those inspiring, grand, big-I Intentions we’ve got to go through a few practice runs with some small-i intentions.

So if you find yourself setting intentions that fail to manifest, don’t despair: You are getting ready to connect with a big one! Your small intentions are like the clothes you bring into the dressing room but decide you don’t like. If you didn’t try them on, you wouldn’t know. And if you didn’t try them on, you wouldn’t recognize the outfit that truly inspires you when you found it.

So get out there and set some intentions. Big-I, small-i, doesn’t matter. You’ve got to be in the game. And the way you get in the game is by setting intentions.

Now lets see what some other folks have to say about Intention:

Speaking about getting in the game, over at ZenChill, Raymond David Salas presents Tiger Woods Is My Guru.

Here are some of Tiger’s own wise words:

Clearly decide what you want.

I know what I want to accomplish and I know how to get there. The ultimate goal is to be the best. Whether that’s the best ever, who knows? I hope so.

Next up we have a new contributor to the carnival, Slade at Shift Your Spirits brings us this entry on Better Messages for Manifesting. He touches on the idea of Big-I Intentions with this suggestion:

Dream bigger.
You must at least start with the Wow Factor in order to propel an idea’s launch; you need big dreams with enough big energy and big excitement to have something to endure. But save the practical, bite-size mindset for executing steps on the long haul toward fruition.

Over at A Better You Blog, Patricia asks: What is your it? Do you want it? Are you determined? Will you dedicate your energy and focus towards it?
She too is asking us to find our Big-I Intention. And she has four steps to help us get there.

Intentions work both ways – positive and negative. Usually our negative intentions are unconscious, though not always. Steve Johnson at the Fast Lane gives us this quick look into what could be possible if we turn our unconscious, negative intentions into conscious positive ones. I just KNEW that would happen.

Over at The Mindful Entrepreneur, Jason provides an insightful look into the Intention-Manifestation model:

Another new contributor to the carnival, Frater Epistis presents How to Manifest Your LifeHe offers this great advice about intentions: Think about your intention as a child thinks about presents on Christmas.

And while this episode of the Napoleon Hill podcast series over at Cultivate Greatness is not specifically focused on intention, Napoleon Hill was most definitely a believer in the power of Intention. So, if you haven’t already done so, go check out Travis Wright’s Law of Success podcast series.

Addendum: A few days after the release of this Carnival Steve Pavlina published this entry on Manifesting Intentions Without Resistance. It’s an extremely powerful look at the ways in which our fears sabotage our work with the Law of Attraction and tools for shifting those fears.
That’s it for this edition of the Law of Attraction Carnival. If you’d like to view past editions you can find them at the Law of Attraction Carnival Homepage. That’s also where you’ll find information about upcoming editions and submission guidelines.

Our next edition will be out on Thanksgiving Tuesday (November 28th) and surprisingly enough will focus on Gratitude.

Holosync Solution Update and Review

My 30-day trial of the Holosync Solution ended on Friday. The trial went out with a bit of a whimper, not due to any fault of the Holosync. This cold that has been following me around since last Monday put a distinctive dent into my routine of getting up at 5:00 and listening to the Holosnyc before beginning the day. However, I did manage to listen to at least 30-minutes of the recordings just about every day. And now that the 30-day trial is officially complete, I feel like I can give you my initial impressions and recommendations. I’ll begin with my bottom line recommendation and move on to the more detailed review.

Bottom Line:

I recommend the Holosync Solution (aff)with the following reservation. It requires a serious commitment of time. Personally, I found it very difficult to commit a full hour to the recordings each day. A support person at Centerpointe recommended listening to the 30-minute recording on a daily basis, and adding in as much of the second recording as possible. So if you can commit 30-minutes a day most days and add another 30-minutes on two or more days each week, the Holosync Solution will absolutely accelerate your evolution.

Detailed Review:

Trigger Point Threshold Raised:

Bill Harris, the creator of the Holosync System talks about trigger points and explains that the Holosync works by raising your trigger point threshold. In other words, it takes more to trigger you. In thirty days of regular Holosync use I found this to be absolutely true. I was very aware of moments when my wife would say something that would normally trigger me into defensiveness. I would catch that “pre-trigger” reflex but not drop into the unconscious post-trigger state that is so familiar and so not fun!

And just yesterday I had a rather unpleasant meeting with a consulting client of mine. We’re having some lack of communication happening between all of the parties involved in the project. Yesterday one of the owners seemed to be projecting some pretty serious negative energy in my direction. Again, I could feel myself getting that urge to go into defensive/confrontation mode, but I was conscious enough of the experience to be able to choose not to.

Increased Creativity:

One clear and positive effect of the Holosync has been a dramatic increase in my creativity. While never one with a dearth of creative urges, since beginning my work with the Holosync my creativity has been working overtime.

For the most part this has been a very positive experience. However, there have been a few nights when, even after listening to the Holosync to turn down the flow of creativity, I have been literally overwhelmed – and unable to sleep – by the ideas flowing from my creative center. I have also been feeling a bit overwhelmed by my inability to devote the time necessary to keep up with all the ideas I have for Evolving Times entries.

My wife has experienced the same heightened creativity. I recognized it the other morning when she came downstairs early (she’s not a morning person) all fired up to share some of the new ideas she had for her concentration at New College.

We both need to ground that heightened creativity. When ungrounded, that creative energy is very fast, even frenetic. And it has the tendency to cause me to lose focus and begin spinning my wheels. I get so caught up in all the creative ideas, I become distracted from my priorities and become very inefficient in my work.

When grounded and focused, that heightened creativity leads to frequent insights and ahas, as well as solutions to problems and clear guidance.

For me, grounding that creativity is as simple as getting outside everyday and getting out into nature a few times each week. When I do that, I’m good. When I don’t, things get a bit chaotic.

Stirring the Pot:

The Holosync material is very clear about the potential for some emotional upheaval when you begin the program and when you progress to the next level. I definitely experienced that for the first five-days or so. (See my first entry on the Holosync here).

But after that, it has been pretty smooth sailing. I suppose I could explore the possibility that my work with the Holosync had something to do with this cold. But I’m going to take full responsibility for creating this resistance to well-being and leave the Holosync out of it!

Time Commitment:

As I mentioned in the Bottom Line section, spending at least one-hour a day listening to the Holosync is a bit more of a time commitment than I can make. I did it through the 30-day trial and I think that focused intensity provided me with a good jumpstart into the program. Now, however, a more realistic scheduled will be more along the lines of three to four day’s/week of the full one-hour session, alternating with thirty-minute sessions with the Autofonix recordings.

Great Support:

Centerpointe touts their excellent customer service and support. My experience has shown that they fulfill that promise. When I called their support line to ask about the most effective way to use the system given my time constraints, I spoke with an extremely knowledgeable and friendly support person. She clearly understood the system, uses it herself, and is willing to take the time to answer my questions so that I’ll get the most out of it.

Conclusion:

Again, after my thirty-day trial, I feel confident in recommending the Holosync system provided that you are willing to commit the time necessary to get the benefits. If not, don’t waste your money.

If you are interested in the Holosync, you can go to the Centerpointe site and order their free Holosync demo package (aff) which includes a CD with a sample of the Holosync technology. I suggest getting and trying the demo package first before purchasing the first level.

This will do it for the regular Holosync updates. If something unusual happens I’ll let you know. And when I move up to the next level I’ll post updates as needed to keep you up to date.

Conditioning 1. Deliberate Creation 0

Three-days coming. Three-days here. Three-days gone.

Did you ever hear that phrase about colds when you were growing up? I must have. And I must have heard it enough, or from someone with enough authority to cause it to become part of my conditioning.

By conditioning I mean that it was acting from a pre-conscious place within my mind. So, while I was not consciously aware that I believed colds last 9-days, hidden down in my conditioned belief system, the recording, “Three-days coming. Three-days here. Three-days gone.” was playing in the background. And that recording, that conditioned belief, made it very difficult for colds to end in less than 9-days.

Saturday night, as I was soaking in a hot bath, attempting to deliberately create my way back to well-being, that phrase popped, out of nowhere, into my awareness. Well, out of nowhere is not the best way of saying it. I’m well aware of where it popped out of…my unconscious mind.

And the only reason it popped from my unconscious mind to my conscious awareness is because, for the past 8-days, I have been so focused on deliberately creating well being.

In our work to become Deliberate Creators, our biggest obstacle and challenge comes from our conditioning. Part of the problem, a big part of the problem really, is that the vast majority of our beliefs and thoughts are based on conditioning.

Our conditioning influences how we think about certain people, including their race, their religion, their class, their clothing, etc. It influences what we think is possible or impossible. Our conditioning tells us what careers, hobbies, activities “people like us” pursue. And conditioning plays a very powerful role in determining how long it takes and even if we can return to a state of well being from injury and illness.

In the quest for deliberate creation, conditioning is the clear nemesis.

So even if you don’t win the with your conditioning on a physical, manifestation level, – as with this cold – just becoming conscious of what was previously unconscious conditioning is, in itself, a major victory!

I’ll be the first to admit that it’s fun to see the positive results of your Deliberate Creation. It would have been great to intend well-being back into my body Monday night and wake up Tuesday morning fully recovered! But becoming aware of this childhood programming that colds last for 9-days is a truly great thing.

Anytime you bring aspects of your unconscious conditioning into your conscious awareness you have taken a great step forward on the path of deliberate creation. So even if you do not see the physical manifestation, when you have an “aha” moment and realize why you have been manifesting some “unwanted” experience over and over, give yourself a big pat on the back.

And just in case you’re counting, today is day eight. So theoretically, if my conditioning continues to win this round, tomorrow should be the last day of this cold!

What Do You Do When The Law Of Attraction Doesn’t Work?

What do you do when the Law of Attraction doesn’t work? Well, that’s a bit of a trick question. You see; The Law of Attraction always works! You always get what you are focusing on.

“But I wasn’t’ focusing on attracting this rotten cold,” I respond, vehemently. And yet, the fact that I have had this cold for four full days tells me that I was, at some level, focused on getting a cold. I could not have attracted this cold into my life if I had not been focused on it.

Certainly I was not going around thinking thoughts like, “Gee, wouldn’t it be great to have a cold for a few days.”

What I was thinking and feeling was something more along the lines of, “I could use a bit of a break, these past few weeks have been pretty darned chaotic and I feel like I still haven’t stepped off that treadmill. In fact, it feels like I’m spinning my wheels quite a bit and not getting a whole lot done.”

I was thinking those thoughts, and feeling a pretty strong emotional connection to my desire for a break, and yet I was not acting on those thoughts and feelings. Instead I continued to plow along with my work, running around on that treadmill, doing my best to ignore that part of me that was asking for a break.

But the Universe wasn’t ignoring that part of me. The Universe clearly heard my call for a break and responded beautifully by arranging for me to “catch this cold.”

I wasn’t asking for a cold; I was asking for a break. But I wasn’t taking a break, so the Universe worked its magic in a manner that I would “listen to.”

So when you look at your life and think, “This Law of Attraction stuff doesn’t work. I wasn’t asking to bounce this check or get into this accident, or catch this cold, or whatever it is.” take a moment to ask yourself what you are really asking for that the Universe is responding to.

The Law of Attraction always works. We always get what we focus on. You can fight it, or you can accept it. But the sooner you accept it, the sooner you can begin to Deliberately Create your life and your world.

I’ve got a lot more to say about this topic, but I’m sick and I need a break right now!

So if you want some more thoughts on this topic, Steve Johnson, over at the Fast Lane, has a couple of good entries to explore. This one is a good place to start: Why the Law of Attraction may not be working for you.

You’ve Seen The Free Hugs Video, Right?

Sometimes I get so caught up in my little world of web cruising that I forget that not everyone spends as much time as I do online. Last week at my Internet Marketing for Deliberate Creators course, someone mentioned the Free Hugs video. It’s been circulating around the web for a few weeks, but less than half the class had seen it.

So just in case you have not had the chance to check it out… Here it is. Trust me, this one is definitely worth your time!
